Subject: Saars/Mosel region Date: Sun, 17 Aug 2003 Sir, I hope you don't mind me taking the liberty of contacting you. I am an ex-British Royal Marine and have just returned from a holiday in Saarburg, Germany. While travelling to Luxembourg on my own last week from Saarburg I came across a peace monument on top of a ridgeline close to the Lux border. On closer inspection I found it was a monument dedicated to the 94th Infanrty Division and to their exploits in the region during the bitter winter of '44/45. There was also a memorial to some members of "M" Company (I think), who lost their lives in that area. Being from a military background and looking out over the surrounding ridgelines and valleys one could only imagine the difficulty of fighting in that open area, having fought in the South Atlantic (Falklands) in 1982 I could however imagine the problems experienced from the weather. I thought you would like to know the memorial is in pristine condition and in a very peaceful setting. I paid my respects and left. Best Wishes, Ian (Johno) Johnson. Ex Sgt. Royal Marines. |
